Does anyone know what was deciphered from the Rosetta Stone

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

In 1799, during the French Invasion of Egypt, the stone was dug up. It’s carved from basault and is about 45 inches in height.

“On the stone were three parallel inscriptions. The top two, hieroglyphic and demotic were in the Egyptian language; the bottom one was Greek. Although the number of lines of each inscription varied, increasing in each section going down the stone, the three sections of inscriptions were roughly the same size.”

While the Greek portion was quickly translated the text of the other two languages remained unknown. Parts of the stone were missing and the speaking of ancient Egyptian was lost. One could guess the three texts were the same but that didn’t solve the problem of translating Hieroglyphics. The “key” was when Young noticed that a cartouche (name) corresponded to the Greek name of the Pharaoh Ptolemy. This lead to matching the Hieroglyphics to phonetics and the ability to translate some of the text. Later ,Champollion completed the translation of the writing..

While the stone allowed the Champollion deciphering of Hieroglyphics, the message was quite simple:
“the Rosetta Stone contained a decree from the general council of Egyptian priests issued in 196 BC”

The Rosetta Stone had three sets of writing, each in a different language. By comparing with one of these languages (which was known) it was possible to learn the other ancient ones and thus opening the way to a lot of other translations.

Is it really free market capitalism when our tax dollars are bailing out Wall Street?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

No. Its Socialism. Businesses should fail. Propping up dysfunctional institutions is bad for America.

And anybody who says, “They are too big to fail”, shouldn’t have let them get that big in the first place. Banks have a cap of 10% of all US Deposits. So a Bank like Bank of America is maxed out on growing its depositor base any further. Thus it isn’t too big to fail.

Government shouldn’t be in the trenches of Wall Street. That is how Socialism starts..

——–

That is the funny thing about the conservative leaders of the finance and banking industry. They are hardcore free market capitalists until it no longer suits them at which point they cry out for subsidies and bail outs saying how can we let this whole industry go into the dirt.

Its not free market capitalism, its the more power and connections you have the better off it is for you to do well. So next time someone is complaining about how some welfare case is leeching off the system even though they live in a relatively poor condition, take a gander at high ranking executives so incompetent in their positions and so irresponsible that they amassed huge amounts of risky assets to have it blow up in their face who still get to enjoy their mansions and swimming pools.

Question of a slightly adult nature……?

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Has sex always been a private act for people or did that start with Christianity? Are there cultures where people just did it whenever and where ever the fancy struck them? I’m talking about modern humans over the past 150,000 years or so.

Sex was not private if u read human history. It was like a game in old times. ‘KAMASUTRA’ describes all about it. Men & women enjoyed it like other sports. You sud know that God concept came after Sex concept. Then only we made it private.

I want to ask some questions to you all? Please help me?

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Friends,

I am linking to this previous question of mine, hope you don’t mind: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…

Friends, I am from India and English is not my first language. In the previous question I got some answers and on the basis of these answers I want to ask one question to you all. But, before asking I want to state that I am a bit introvert kind of guy. Generally I am concerned about studies and career. I never gave too much time on serious relationship/analysing the nuances of serious relationship. You can say I am a bit immature in girly matters. Please answer the following questions:

Whats the basic difference between the flirting behaviour of nice girls and mean girls?

Nice girls : bubbly, never insult anyone, giggle, look at your eyes and then look down, bite their lip, play with your hair and have fun with you, hug you friendly, look at you friendly, look deep in your eyes

Mean girls: stare at you with a sly or smug look, make sarcastic remarks, touch your chest or arm, play hard to get, make fun of others as jokes, wear short shorts and low shirt lines, want sex more than love…

Why does economists consider competion as efficient but that under monopoly as reducing social welfare?

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Under perfect competition neither consumers nor producers have market power (they can’t influence the price) so the producers’ decision boils down to only choosing the level of output that maximizes their profits. And conditions are such that they maximize profit at a higher output than if they where monopolists.
On the other hand, monopolist have market power so they decide over two variables: price and output. In this case, they can make more profits by charging a higher price and producing a lower output.
This is why monopolies reduce social welfare because by limiting their output they are preventing some to have access to a scarce good and making it inaccessible for others to consume the good because of its high price, compared to perfect competition where prices are lower and output is larger, which would be more efficient than a monopoly because no resources are being squandered or under-used.

——–

Well monopoly is the absence of competition. Monopolistic firms can maximize profits by producing less of the good than the amount demanded- causing the price to be higher. If the firm was facing competition if would produce more of the good and the price would be lower.

———

competition is efficient cuz customers gets to choose. in monopoly, ppl have can not choose, so the vendors can sell the product at a high price if they want. if the products r not elastic, ppl will b forced to buy that product

Seriously, what is wrong with men?

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007
  1. I’m sorry for what you’ve had to go through, but, no, not all guys are jerks
  2. Perhaps you need to meet some males worthy of your attention. We’re not all that way.
  3. I agree that not ALL men are jerks, but it seems like all the men you have met are. You need a change of scenery girl. Get out of that hell you call “home” and you may start to meet some decent people (even guys)
  4. You have a very common life.Know that your story isnt very different than than the next woman. What i say is if you always look where you always look you will always get what you get.Try newer surroundings. And good luck!
  5. You tell me what makes all men in your life like this. if you can’t change them for better don’t let them change you. have a faith and try to make your life better always.

believe it or not there are some fantastic men out there, you just have to know where to look. nobody can make excuses for what has happened to you, and none of it is your fault. your brother is probably harbouring some issues though, regarding the father and step father situation, as you probably know, your father and step father would have been the role models for your brothers behaviour. this doesnt make it right though. maybe you should talk to him, him may not even know he is the way he is. you also need to talk to someone (ie a psychotherapist) about what has happened to you, if you havent already, they will help you deal with what happened as well as give you some more self confidence. as for the boys at your school, all boys are like that, and maybe making friends with some girls wouldnt be a bad idea, but be choosy, as you will probably confide in them your deepest darkest secrets. as for the guy who told you to go away, it could be that he had more on his mind thatn you know about, and he is finding it hard to deal with his problems as well as yours (he could have been a bit nicer though). you never know, he might have been the nice guy you are looking for and may care about you a hell of a lot, which then it would hurt him to see you in so much pain.
sorry about the long winded reply, but i hope i helped.

  1. hang in there.youve just had one hell of a life so far.were not all assholes.i wish the best for you because more than likely your going to or probably already do have major trust issues when it is going to involve us.i wish i could of been the most recent friend of yours because what i need more than anything right now is a female friend.not trying to get a laugh from the guys.lifes a strange place.it’ll be alright.it’ll all work out.
  2. Really, not all of them are jerks, but the majority are. Don’t worry you are 17 you will meet a lot of good guys. May be you need to try some time to avoid friendship with men. See what will happen, may be you need to take your time.
  3. After reading your post…
I’m sorry that you had to go through all that…
Try joining a “support”-group, as in just a group of people coming together having some fun.
I’m a Christian youth leader, and we have a youth programme.
I’m sure you could probably find something somewhere that would fit you.

By the way. I believe everything happens for a reason. Keep your chin up. Stay positive.
If you get through this, you will be an ambassador for women who have the same problems. And perhaps you can even help them. Let that motivate you.
But first. Help yourself. You are strong. You CAN get through this.

  4. U have gone through some big difficulties! All I can say is ur plain unlucky regards to males. Hope you find a nice person soon.

This is the first time I’ve had a dream where I actually decide to stop running?

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007
  1. Usually if I dream that I am running it is because I have a problem that is bothering me. I’d say things have settled down for you and going smoothly. I hope I am right for you.
  2. I really don’t know. But I don’t like pit-bull…..
  3. It may been you’ve decided to face whatever problems you have and deal with them, rather than run away from them. I think this is a very positive dream for you.
  4. Stop handling dogs to avoid dreams about being bitten!
  5. You are coming to grips with a situation in your life. You have avoided for too long. You have run away from the situation, not wishing to face it, for fear of failure/defeat. You have come to a place in your life where you have the confidence and intelligence to solve the problem.
  6. It means you’re ready to face your fear.

Is it possible to control our dreams when sleeping?

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

What you are talking about is called lucid dreaming. I think, with practice, it is possible. Ever seen the movie Waking Life? After watching that, I was obsessed with lucid dreaming for a while. It’s difficult though, and I’m not sure it makes for the most restful sleep. But, in your case, I guess it’s better than nightmares.
