Question about my pups?

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

They have just turned 8 months old. One weight around eight pounds, the other around nine pounds. They are purebred cavalier king charles spaniels.
The problem is, I have just saw a picture of another 8-month-old cavalier who looks competely different. Not different breed, just grown up more with longer ears and coat. My pups haven’t looked any different other then size since we got them at 12 weeks. Can somebody tell me when they are suppose to grow out there coat?

Here is a cavalier at eight months old:

Generally by one year they should look like what they will as adults. Do you know for sure that they are pure? Most cavaliers are about 15 pounds full grown and they should be at their full weight at 8 months. If you have seen the parents then you could tell what their hair will look like. But if you got them from a bad breeder, a pet store or the shelter there’s a good chance they aren’t pure.

My cat has a lump in her neck since getting shots?

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

I was a responsible pet owner and took my new kitties to have their shots. Well my one kitten has had a huge lump in her neck ever since (it’s been 24 days!) Right before the guy did the shots he warned it would burn and said there would be a lump for probably a couple weeks but not to worry (it won’t be a tumor.)

When we recently brought her in for her second set of shots, his reaction to seeing that the lump was still there was “hmm”… He took her in the other room and poked it and said “sometimes they get air in there”…

She used to be really affectionate and now she doesn’t really like anyone to touch her and it’s been weeks. I also don’t know if it’s related but it seems like she can’t purr anymore, she used to purr all the time. She’s still active and is eating alright, it’s just that the bump doesn’t seem normal. Does anyone have any helpful advice? I’m getting concerned since the guy who did the shots was an assistant, not the regular doctor… Please help!?

This happened to my cat but the lump did eventually go away. It took awhile though and I was in a panic. I read that the vets shouldn’t use that area for shots anymore because cats are getting tumors, sometimes cancerous ones from the vaccines going in that area. My cats lump did go away, maybe you can give it a little more time to see if it too goes away. I also think that sometimes they don’t feel well after the vaccine depending on which ones they got at the time. Trust your instinct though, if something doesn’t seem right, call the vet and let them know your concerns.

Vaccines should never be given in the scruff of the neck. Because of the incidence of vaccine associated sarcomas (tumors), injections are given at the top of the leg - thus allowing amputation if a tumor does indeed form. I don’t know if this is a tumor or not, or if it’s a vaccine reaction - but I’d be seeing another vet for a second opinion. You can always go back to this vet if you are comfortable with him - but get the second opinion. Or if you have only seen the tech that gave the vaccine, insist on an appointment with the regular vet.

Can I put 3 neon tetras in 1.2 gallon tank?

Monday, July 14th, 2008

I have 2 tanks:

1. 29 gallon tank with 5 guppies, 5 platies, 3 snails, 2 plecos
2. 1.2 gallon tank with nothing in it

Sorry but a 1.2gal tank is not really much use for anything, especially neon tetras which need good water quality and an established tank. Very hard to maintain in a tiny tank.

You could possibly keep a few shrimp, but it’s still tricky to keep a tiny tank like that running

Where do you put a water softener pillow in a aquarium? Does it float or does it go into my filter?

I need help with this please. Also is there a better way to get the hardness out of my water?

It goes in the filter so it comes in contact with the maximum amount of water. Another, slightly safer way (though if you’re going to chemically soften the water, the resins in pillows are best, in my opinion), is to put small amounts of peat moss (either from the pet store, or organic/untreated sphagnum moss from garden stores) in the filter. Also, adding a fair bit of driftwood will have the same affect as peat on a smaller scale. As a last resort, you could mix your tap water with reverse osmosis water, which is almost entirely pure, and will lower the concentration of the dissolved minerals that constitute water hardness.

Do animals get pleasure from sex or is it just an instinctive action for breeding?

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Well the budgie I used to have certainly seemed to be in seventh heaven when he used to have it off with the pot bird on the mantlepiece. He would bash its beak in excitement bobbing his head up and down and chattering wildly before he did the act. A randy buggar was he. I don’t know what the females are like.

I believe it is just mostly instinct. When a dog is in heat, they are ovulating and are in their most fertile state. An animal that operates off of instinct has, among other things, a great need to multiply and strengthen the race. This explains the dog’s great urge to go outside.

However, it has been proven that a few animals, such as dolphins, do not have sex for mating reasons alone — it is a recreational activity, and a way to strengthen bonds between members in a pod.

What kind of fish should i get?

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

1.      shave it.

2.      I know this isn’t a fish, but you should consider getting African mini-frogs. They are fun to watch and play well with other fish.

3.      Maybe 3 or 4 African cichlids. 20 is too small for Dempseys and large cichlids.

4.      Damzels

5.      female betta are nice, you can find them in pretty colors if you look hard, and lots of little guys like neons and tetras are pretty easy

6.      I don’t know much about fish. But one thing I do know is get fish that can mix together. They say three of the same.

7.      The cute little mini sharks.

8.      cichlids are mean dont get them!!!! i have some danio’s platty’s those are the ones i have had the best luck with. but make sure to get a succker fish or and algi eater also… snails aren’t that great.

Do u find cats scary?

Saturday, December 1st, 2007
  1. No I don’t and you wouldn’t either if you gave them a chance.
  2. OMG yes! and cat ppl get insulted when i get scared of their cats

as to why? i dunno something in the eyes, the way they strut…the whole superstition thing about them…..both my siblings claim they saw a black cat in their room when they awoke in the mid of the night and everything in the house was locked…both were on different occasions

  3. I definitely find cats creepy. I couldn’t tell you exactly why, but I think it is because they remind me of evil magic( you know black cats and witches).
  4. I love cats! Had cats all my life! Never had a dog. Cats are so cool!
  5. I find them intriguing! You never know what is going on in that head. And their eyes are just stunning! It is kinda creepy when they jump up and do the crazy cat run without any provocation, but hell, it’s really entertaining after the initial startle.
  6. No I like cats but some can look scary if they have no ears or something or those hairless cats, those are creepy.
  7. shave it.
  8. No not at all….but I know someone who is…..lol

Why is my 8 year old cat?

Thursday, October 25th, 2007
  1. He is marking his territory. Or take him to the vet just to make sure. But I’m pretty sure he is just marking his territory
  2. Well it COULD be just an aging cat thing, however urinary problems are common with male cats. He could have a bladder infection, or worse- kidney or bladder stones. I lost a male cat to bladder stones. Peeing around the house was the first sign of any problem, and by then it was too late. Some other health problems like diabetes and tumors can cause this too. If I were you, I’d take him to the vet right away and make sure he’s alright.
  3. some one has come inside your house with another cat scent on their shoes, cats have a good nose, so your cat smells it and trys to out spray it with it’s pee!!Try cleaning some areas with citiral oil.
  4. I won’t waste time with a lengthy answer, but.. this site here:
    http://www.hdw-inc.com/litterbox.htm
Has plenty of information on your problem, just scroll down a little to “URINE MARKING AND SPRAYING” and read up on that.
  5. Inappropriate elimination is often a symptom of urinary tract infection. The cat begins to associate the pain he experiences while peeing with the litter box, so goes elsewhere. He might also be trying to get your attention.

So your first step is to have the cat evaluated by a veterinarian. If you notice he is straining a lot but not producing much (may seem constipated), then it is urgent enough to find an emergency vet after hours. Male cats sometimes get blocked up, and then it is only a matter of hours before it is too late. If he is not completely blocked up, then it can wait until morning - but make sure to get him in to see the vet tomorrow.

Here is a link to a good article on how to solve litter box problems, in case it’s not a medical issue http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/our_pe…

  6. He is marking his territory.
  7. is he spraying or urinating?

the first thing that comes to my mind, especially with an older cat is kidney issues or diabetes. it could also be a urinary tract infection. if this is a new thing for him to do, a trip to the vets is a good idea. if its not a medical issue they can advise you on what to do for behavior problems.

how are is appetite and water intake?

What can I do for my local SPCA?

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

You can organize a pet food drive (ask what kind they feed before doing this, and specifically request that kind).

You can offer to sponsor an animal by donating a small amount of money each month.

Spread the word about adoption vs. buying from breeders.

Raffle off something pet-related and donate the proceeds to them.

Ask everyone you know for “Christmas presents” for the shelter.

Encourage people to donate, perhaps instead of buying you one present they intended to, they could donate the cost to the shelter.

Visit the director and offer to help with paperwork, adoption screenings, addressing envelopes, or whatever else needs to be done.

Report animal cruelty and neglect immediately instead of letting the problem worsen, and encourage others to do the same.

Ask what supplies they need and then get together with your class or coworkers to send a box full of their preferred type of toys/food dishes/etc.

Get together a group to bring the office workers hot chocolate and sing them carols during a lull between visitors. Hand out Christmas cards with animal pictures that say something like ‘You’re the real Santa Paws’, etc.

Adopt a pet if you can.
